- ➤ Champion Autism Network will host the annual Best of the Beach Balls Meatball Challenge on Saturday, October 25 in the Yaupon parking lot at Surfside Drive, Surfside Beach. The family-friendly event will raise autism awareness and funds while showcasing meatball makers including restaurants, food trucks and home cooks — a contest held alongside the Myrtle Beach Car Club Halloween Rod Run Car Show. - ➤ Outside Alive Farms in Myrtle Beach will host Spook Nights from Oct. 23 to Oct. 25 and from Oct. 30 to Nov. 1 to raise funds for Open Gate Animal Sanctuary, which cares for over 100 animals such as alpacas, sheep, roosters and horses. The event will feature Halloween activities for all ages including a haunted walk for older kids and a play area for toddlers — cars cost $35 at the gate and $25 with a reservation. WPDE
- ➤ Barefoot Landing in North Myrtle Beach will host its annual BooFest on Saturday from noon until 4pm featuring costume contests for kids and pets with registration opening at 11am — along with stilt walkers, live music and Halloween activities — and attendees may enjoy a free showing of Hocus Pocus at 7pm on the Dockside Village Amphitheater Lawn. - ➤ Coastal Carolina University tied for number four in the Most Innovative South Regional Universities category in U.S. News and World Report’s 2026 rankings—showing the school is focused on personalized education and new learning practices. - ➤ SCDNR urged locals to clean bird feeders during fall and winter to reduce the spread of diseases like avian pox and finch eye disease in backyard birds—Amy Tegeler advised soaking feeders in warm soapy water and using a bleach solution for seed feeders or a vinegar mix for hummingbird feeders, while also recommending feeders be placed less than three feet or more than ten feet from homes to avoid window collisions. - ➤ A developer in Murrells Inlet is appealing the Horry County Zoning Commission's denial of a special exception for a proposed psychiatric hospital last month—claiming the zoning rules violate the Americans with Disabilities Act while local residents worry about neighborhood safety, especially for children. - ➤ North Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue is launching a new system on the community connect app that lets residents share emergency details such as household info, pets, and special needs to help firefighters prepare for calls + the program is free to join. - ➤ The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking community feedback on a plan to extend SC 31 into North Carolina by proposing seven route options, with Route Four preferred to improve road capacity and safety. Residents in North Strand expressed concerns about potential displacement and the impact on local homes as the project’s cost is estimated to be between $652 million and $919 million. WPDE
- ➤ North Myrtle Beach will have temporary lane and sidewalk closures on Poinsett Street and Windy Hill Road Extension starting Friday, Oct. 24 and again on Monday, Oct. 27 from 7 a.m. until early evening each day. The one-month closures—subject to weather changes—are part of a project to install a new water transmission line that will improve drinking water and are funded by the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority under the state’s Infrastructure Investment Program.
