BUSINESS NEWS

  • Sports Cards Plus is opening today and tomorrow in Myrtle Beach with free food, live-streamed box openings, and raffles for signed memorabilia—owners will host an autograph signing with former MLB all-star Orlando Hudson today.  WMBF News

  • BJ Kinard talked with Alex Ossmann at Ripley's Aquarium to explain Penguin-palooza, a new exhibit that visitors can experience when they visit the aquarium.  WFXB Fox TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Parents at Discovery Charter School in Myrtle Beach expressed concerns about its village model—worrying that the focus on enrolling students came at the cost of real learning, while others satisfied that their children received the same education as in public schools. Principal Lane Morris said the school addressed issues such as teacher turnover and individualized education programs as it served 515 students with 35 teachers.  WPDE
  • Marley Nada, 13, an eighth grader at Ten Oaks Middle School, was named Student of the Month as she excels in academics and sports—she is taking two high school credit courses and plans to pursue a career in commercial law after moving from Los Angeles and Chicago.  My Horry News
  • Mindful Journey Academy is hosting its Fall Festival Fundraiser today at Wondering Farm along Daphane Drive in Conway—families will enjoy a unique trunk-or-treat where treats come from tree trunks and the event features live music, farm animals, a bonfire gathering, vendors and a costume contest.  WFXB Fox TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Weekend storms caused beach erosion and washouts along the Grand Strand, and a professor explained that severe weather continues to pose risks to Myrtle Beach beaches as the Beach Advisory Committee urged residents to stay alert. Officials will update the public soon—residents should prepare for possible beach closures while repairs are planned.  WMBF News
  • The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources hosted a meeting at Coastal Carolina University earlier this week to grow its SCORE program in Horry and Georgetown counties; local leaders, restaurant partners and educators joined together—aiming to boost oyster recycling and build strong living shorelines.  WPDE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • North Myrtle Beach officials announced that a groundbreaking ceremony will take place on Oct. 25 for the $6.5 million Central Park Pickleball Complex on Possum Trot Road, located across from the J. Bryan Floyd Community Center. Ceremonial shovels will hit the ground at 9:30 a.m. and Pickleball with the Stars will start at 10 a.m.—introducing a 15-court facility with a covered championship court, clubhouse, and open lawn for spectators.  My Horry News
  • On Thursday, Oct. 16th, MBPD announced the passing of Officer Joseph Dawson, a veteran with over two decades of service (6 years in the Coast Guard and 18 years with NY State Police). He joined the department after moving to Myrtle Beach in 2021 (welcomed earlier this year) and was off duty at the time of his passing.  WPDE
  • SCDOT announced nighttime lane closures on Highway 544 over the Intracoastal Waterway due to construction. The closures will run from 7pm to 6am Sunday—Thursday starting Sunday and lasting until the end of October so drivers must be cautious.  WFXB
