  • Hundreds of volunteers will take part in United Way’s Day of Caring on Friday at Grand Strand Miracle League and Finklea Community Center to spruce up landscaping and playgrounds+ the event, which has supported local nonprofits for over 20 years, will help strengthen community ties.  WPDE

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Debris from Tuesday's shrimp boat fire off the coast of North Myrtle Beach washed ashore on Myrtle Beach's north end and was removed by crews Wednesday morning—residents are advised to call the city's non-emergency line if they see any along the beach.  WPDE

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Sports Cards Plus in Myrtle Beach will open its new shop on Oct. 18-19 to give local fans a spot to buy, sell and trade sports cards, comic books and more—owner Dave Bell said live breaks and charity raffles with special appearances, including former MLB player Orlando Hudson, will add excitement. The growing collectibles market on the Grand Strand is drawing both young collectors and retirees to explore new opportunities.  My Horry News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Kingston Joinery in downtown Conway preserves history by offering handmade furniture demonstrations every Monday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.—led by joiner Denley Caughman and his apprentices, including a 13-year-old, who use traditional methods to craft period pieces. An open house on Saturday, Oct.18 will showcase a Lincoln chair that took nearly two years to build using historic techniques.  My Horry News

  • On Tuesday, Oct. 7, the Academy for Technology and Academics hosted Horry County Schools’ Career Readiness Showcase where local business leaders toured diverse career programs — automotive, culinary, HVAC, and more — to help students become job-ready. ATA will add an electrician technician major next year to meet growing local workforce demand.  My Horry News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayoral candidate Eva Rigney is advocating a gun-free zone along Ocean Boulevard to boost visitor safety—she is circulating a petition among business owners to designate the area from 9th Ave. North to 10th Ave. North while local officials note the plan may conflict with Second Amendment rights. The mayoral race will be decided on Nov. 4.  WPDE
  • Today, North Myrtle Beach began building a 2-million gallon water storage tank and a 30-inch water transmission line in the Windy Hill area using a $10 million grant. Temporary lane closures and detours are expected—residents should plan accordingly until the project ends by summer.  WPDE
  • Horry County Council approved the second reading today, allowing Tidelands-Health to plan a 20,000 square-foot emergency room and a 15,000 square-foot doctor's office along Forestbrook Road+residents worry added traffic will challenge the busy area. Officials say crews will begin widening the road as part of the Ride III project and a third reading will be held before construction starts after the first of the year.  WFXB Fox TV

  • The 10th annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Beach Walk will take place on Saturday at Crown Reef Beach Resort and Waterpark along Ocean Boulevard with registration at 9 a.m. and the walk starting at 10 a.m.—survivors, thrivers and supporters will join the 5k walk that features a tribute wall honoring loved ones, while all proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society.  WFXB Fox TV

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Conway planners approved Reserve at Millpond on Oct.2 — a townhome community with 234 privately owned units in 45 buildings that will be built on a 41.28-acre site behind Turtle Creek with over 8.6 acres of open space and a gravel walking trail over wetlands. The project awaits final review by the planning department’s Technical Review Committee before construction moves forward.  My Horry News
