  • The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach will host Oktoberfest in Barefoot Landing on October 4th from Noon to 8:00 p.m.—the event offers live music, food, drinks, and a dog costume contest with $10 wristbands that benefit the society.  WFXB Fox TV
  • The Grand Strand chapter of the South Carolina Native Plant Society is hosting its first native plant sale in Surfside Beach on October 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Memorial Park— the free event will offer vendors, low-cost soil testing by Clemson extension, eco-activities for kids, and expert native plant advice.  WFXB Fox TV
  • British car fans will view over 100 new and classic cars including Bentleys, Caterhams, Jaguars and a nearly century-old Rolls Royce at the 12th annual Myrtle Beach Britfest held by the Grand Strand British Car Club at The Market Common on Saturday—this free event supports local charities.  WPDE
  • Myrtle Beach is hosting a Halloween home decorating contest—residents can enter to show off their creative spooky displays and join the citywide celebration.  WMBF News

  • Trader Joe's opened its doors yesterday on the Grand Strand as local shoppers quickly filled the aisles to explore the new grocery store—marking the first Trader Joe's in the area.  WMBF News
  • Parker's Kitchen opened its first Horry County store in Conway on Sept.30 and the chain plans to open two stores in Murrells Inlet by the end of year — a key step in its expansion along the Grand Strand.  The Post and Courier

CULTURE NEWS

  • Conway launched its third annual City of Halloween celebration, turning the downtown into a hub for spooky activities with a Big Booginning costumed march and a Midnight Market open today through Sunday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. — The festivities include movie themes from classic films such as The Wizard of Oz, Hocus Pocus and Forrest Gump and draw local families along with out-of-state visitors.  WPDE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Myrtle Beach Mayor Brenda Bethune donated a significant sum to Coastal Carolina University to create the Mayor Bethune Law Enforcement Education Development endowment for the Spadoni College of Education and Social Sciences—supporting a new leadership program for Myrtle Beach Police officers.  WPDE

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that a $72M beach renourishment project will start in early December, weather permitting, with crews placing 2M cubic yards of sand along North Myrtle Beach through Garden City—shoring up dunes for safety. The project is expected to finish in about 150 days and the public is asked to stay clear of work zones for safety.  WMBF News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • North Myrtle Beach held a public meeting Tuesday to get views on a new short-term rental rule that would require owners living more than 30 miles away to use a local property manager—owners said they already take care of their units themselves. Several out-of-town owners expressed concerns about the proposed rule and its impact on their work.  WMBF News
  • Myrtle Beach city leaders met with waterfront business owners on Wednesday to review the weekend traffic pattern, including the police practice of flushing the north-bound lane of Ocean Boulevard at 4 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Business owners said the closures have hurt sales and reduced customer visits—police will use the feedback to craft a new plan by next year.  WMBF News

  • The Beach Ball Classic announced teams for its high school basketball tournaments in Myrtle Beach. The boys tournament will run Dec. 27 to Dec. 30 and the girls tournament will run Dec. 19 to Dec. 22 at the Convention Center — a holiday tradition since 1981.  WMBF News
