COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Beachfront Kitchen and Bar is hosting the Grand Strand Optimist Club Banquet and Spaghetti Dinner today from 5:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. and will present donation checks to local organizations—Children's Recovery Center, Champion Autism Network, SOS Care, Fostering Hope, Community Kitchen, YMCA and Boys and Girls Club.  WPDE
  • Fall activities will take place along the Grand Strand as Thompson Farm in Conway hosts a pumpkin weekend, drive-in Halloween movies and a tractor weekend on Saturdays and Sundays between 10am and 6pm and on the first four Fridays in October & Cabana for All Seasons in Pawleys Island offers a pumpkin patch, cornstalks, painting and photo opportunities every weekend until Halloween. Brookgreen Gardens will hold Harvest Home Weekend on October 4th and 5th with a pumpkin patch, build-a-scarecrow station, maze, food and entertainment between 9:30am and 4pm.  WFXB Fox TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Boulineau's Express in North Myrtle Beach earned national recognition when American River Wellness ranked it No.3 among 126 locally owned gas stations on Sea Mountain Highway. It has been family owned since 1948 — and was voted South Carolina's top independent gas station.  My Horry News
  • The Johnson family announced plans to build a new sawmill along McCracken Road in Galivants Ferry that will create products like railroad ties, shipping pallets and supplies for landscapers and wastewater treatment facilities. The $10 million project is expected to create 18 jobs—supporting local loggers and truck drivers after recent mill closures.  My Horry News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Champion Autism Network announced that its annual Best of the Beach Balls Meatball Challenge will be held on October 25th with restaurants, food trucks, catering companies and home cooks showcasing their meatball skills to raise autism awareness and funds. The family-friendly event will take place with the Myrtle Beach Car Club Halloween Rod Run Car Show + sponsorships are still being accepted.  WFXB Fox TV
  • Darrell McDowell, a former fire chief with 46 years in Conway now working as facilities chief, builds spooky holiday props and animatronics out of love for the city. Conway will debut a new Halloween display featuring themes from The Wizard of Oz—Wicked, Jaws, Scooby-Doo, Forrest Gump and Ghostbusters as the city increases its holiday budget from hospitality fees.  The Post and Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Horry County Schools is installing a new panic alert system to protect students, teachers, and staff by equipping them with wearable panic buttons that track location and connect to 911—staff training will occur before full installation by January.  WFXB Fox TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Coastal forests help protect communities from hurricanes, as Clemson professor Skip Van Bloem said trees lessen storm impacts by reducing heavy winds, rain and surges—especially in Myrtle Beach and Horry County where new development has reduced these natural barriers. He warned that areas with fewer green spaces may face greater storm damage.  WPDE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Myrtle Beach city council members will review a proposal as a developer requested an incentive program to build a new hotel on Ocean Boulevard—details will be discussed in an upcoming meeting.  WMBF News
  • Horry County school board chairman David Cox sparked controversy after posting a comment on social media following the death of political activist Charlie Kirk. He apologized at a board meeting — and some parents now demand his resignation and more accountability from the board.  WPDE
  • Myrtle Beach council passed the first reading Tuesday approving an ordinance that lets Pickleport Myrtle Beach build new pickleball courts on an unused part of Whispering Pines Golf Club. The decision comes as interest in pickleball grows and follows a draft agreement approved by the National Park Service on September 8.  WPDE
  • The city issued a Request for Qualifications plus it seeks a private developer to redevelop roughly 13 acres in the Arts & Innovation District while major infrastructure work, such as moving utilities underground and upgrading stormwater systems, is underway. Proposals are due by Oct 30 at 2 p.m.  WPDE
  • Myrtle Beach City Council passed the first reading of a regulation on Tuesday that restricts personal electric devices on roads with speed limits above 30 mph, sidewalks, and city property. Officials said the measure is designed to protect public health and safety—residents may need to adjust their mobility routines.  WPDE
