COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Myrtle Beach held its annual September 11 Remembrance Ceremony on Sept. 11 at Unity Memorial in Warbird Park as over 250 residents gathered to honor nearly 3,000 lives lost and the bravery of first responders. Mayor Brenda Bethune and featured speakers recalled the pain of that day and celebrated the community’s unity — a tribute that will keep the memory alive.  My Horry News
  • Liberty Brew and Vines Restoration, Plumbing and HVAC hosted a free coffee event for veterans and first responders on Friday — the event ran from 10 a.m. to noon in Conway as part of Patriot Week.  WPDE

CRIME NEWS

  • On Friday, the North Myrtle Beach Police Department announced its two-day Public Space Safety and Restoration Initiative to address illegal urban camping and misuse of parks, streets, and public right-of-ways per City Ordinance 16-16 — the operation was carried out with help from the Community Services Division, Special Operations Division, and City Sanitation Department.  WPDE

  • B.J. meets Alex Ossmann at Ripley’s Aquarium’s Planet Jellies exhibit in Myrtle Beach today as visitors enjoy the colorful display—Ripley’s will celebrate World Miniature Golf Day on Sept. 21st by offering free play for children under 12 at its Crazy Golf attraction.  WFXB Fox TV
  • Luke Bryan has been named the second headliner for the Carolina Country Music Fest set for June 4—7 in downtown Myrtle Beach; he joins Blake Shelton and Post Malone for a weekend of popular country music.  WPDE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Coastal High School — a charter school on a new 100-acre campus — hosted a raptor demonstration from the Aviation Conservation Center for Birds of Prey on Sept. 11 where students saw a Ural owl, a northern white-faced owl, and a hawk. Program leader Ashley Salsberry said the interactive event was the first in a series of monthly outdoor lessons designed to integrate environmental studies with hands-on learning.  My Horry News

  • Longtime reef builder Capt. Eddie's last boat sank to become an artificial reef off Georgetown coast—State DNR and CCA will sink a torpedo boat and a relic dinosaur to expand marine habitats in the future.  The Post and Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Henry McMaster signed an executive order that revises telecommuting policies for state employees — the order limits remote work to two days per week with strict approval requirements and disallows agency directors from telecommuting. The updated rules, coming after an earlier review this year, take effect immediately.  WPDE
  • Seven candidates have filed to run for the three Loris City Council seats, including incumbents Andrea Coleman, Kelli Gerald and Carroll D. Padgett, and the election is set for Tuesday, Nov. 4 with voter registration closing 30 days before the vote.  My Horry News
  • The ACLU of SC condemned the killing of Charlie Kirk—urging school leaders to avoid punishing educators for personal political statements and to uphold free speech rights.  WPDE
