ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Horry County firefighter Dimario Stephens, who had worked as an EMT since May, died when his 2020 Nissan sedan veered off Wahee Road near Cool Springs Road in Marion County and struck a tree shortly after 11 p.m. on Sept. 3—he was alone in the vehicle. The Post and Courier
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Joyanna Vansant, 53, remains in jail in Horry County after a judge denied bond on a murder charge for shooting her ex-husband, 60, on May 16 at a home on Dinger Drive in Burgess, where police say his body was later found locked in a closet during a welfare check when he did not show up for work. - ➤ On Aug. 31 in Myrtle Beach, police arrested 35-year-old Shane Cook Wesley after he attempted to kidnap a woman by grabbing her arm when she refused his offer for a ride and threatened a bystander by asking how they would like a 45 — officers later found an open container of Crown Royal and a baggie with white powder residue in his car. - ➤ North Myrtle Beach councilwoman Nikki Fontana was arrested on Aug. 30 for DUI after officers observed her slurred speech and red, glossy eyes during a traffic stop near 48th Avenue North and North Kings Highway—she has served on council since 2013. WPDE
- ➤ Emmanual Alexander Campbell, 18, was arrested on Aug. 30 for armed robbery and possession of a weapon during a theft at Pepper Geddings Recreation Center—he allegedly met a victim through Snapchat to steal a Cartier watch, cologne, and hoodies. WPDE
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Coastal Carolina University has set a new record with 11,881 students enrolled for the Fall semester, marking a 6.2% increase over last year's total. The university also reported a 9.7% rise in its largest first-year class of 2,942 students—final enrollment figures will be confirmed after the mid-October census. WPDE
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Horry County’s Planning Commission approved a rezoning request on Sept. 5 to allow 205 new homes off Brown Swamp Road in Conway; the plan splits into 124 single-family homes on 64.4 acres and an additional 52.7 acres for other housing (a traffic study is required amid safety concerns raised by three residents). - ➤ Myrtle Beach International Airport simulated a collision for an emergency training exercise on Sept. 4 to help first responders practice injury treatment and communication procedures—150 individuals from Horry County agencies took part. The exercise tested the coordinated response needed in real incidents. My Horry News
- ➤ Horry County will hold municipal elections Nov. 4 — candidate filing ended on Sep. 5 for mayor and council races in Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Aynor, Atlantic Beach, Briarcliffe Acres, Conway, Loris, and Surfside Beach. All races are non-partisan with incumbents and new candidates vying for local offices. The Post and Courier
