  • Veteran Billy Bowering—founder of nonprofit Day 1 Week 1—launched the organization in 2023 to offer free mental health, financial, and couples counseling services to veterans and first responders. The nonprofit’s podcast shares personal stories like that of ex-paramedic Parker McBryde to help community members get the care they need.  WMBF News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • At Brookgreen Gardens in Murrells Inlet, horticulturist Kevin Bendetti tested a giant Victoria ‘Longwood Hybrid’ waterlily by adding sandbags until the pad held about 20 pounds—far below Florida’s Bok Tower Gardens’ 183-pound record. The nonprofit is competing in the global Waterlily Weigh-Off against 48 other gardens to measure pad strength via social media entries.  The Post and Courier
  • Myrtle Beach State Park offers a nature center with snakes, glass lizards, and birdwatching while an October program will teach about shark secrets and how to hunt for shark teeth. A beach sweep is set for September 20 at 9 a.m. at Shelter B2 — a chance to reduce trash and protect marine life.  WPDE
