  • North Myrtle Beach dedicated a new memorial on August 11 to honor police officers and firefighters—many of whom made the ultimate sacrifice—during a ceremony at the local park and sports complex where officials and first responders gathered.  WPDE

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Two motorists died in recent Horry County highway crashes that raised the 2025 death toll to 38; Darius Grant of Conway died early Saturday when his vehicle struck a utility pole on Highway 701 South and 22-year-old Jimmy Bellamy of Little River died after a single-vehicle crash on Cedar Branch Road on August 6—both cases are under investigation by state authorities.  My Horry News

  • Grand Strand business owners reported that increased tariffs are raising costs and affecting operations—some may change prices soon to help cover their expenses.  WMBF News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tropical Storm Erin formed in the Atlantic and is expected to turn into a major hurricane by the weekend — forecast models show it moving north while keeping it off the Gulf, so residents along the East Coast and in Bermuda should stay alert.  WPDE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Conway Planning Commission delayed its vote on annexing and zoning a 109-acre tract near Cultra Road and Oak Street because the required advertisement lacked the property identification number—an official public hearing will be held on Sept. 4 at 5:30 p.m. to address the issue.  My Horry News

  • Barndominium homes are growing in popularity in the Myrtle Beach area as families like the Browns sold their home and moved into a custom barndo near Conway last July—recently, The Barndo Co. held a grand opening at Coastal Centre mall and plans to start about a dozen projects in the area with expansion by year’s end.  The Post and Courier
