  • Surfside Beach entrepreneur Maren Doda launched her mobile nursery Planted by the Sea from a 1990 Chevrolet mini school bus painted pink. She left her job as a gymnastics teacher to sell tropical house plants at festivals and events in Surfside — her business quickly earned local support.  My Horry News

CRIME NEWS

  • Timoteo Sanchez, 26, was charged with attempted murder and weapon possession after firing shots during a parking dispute on July 30 in Myrtle Beach (police found bullet holes outside a trailer home on Ellington Street) and he fled before officers arrived.  WPDE

CULTURE NEWS

  • Netflix's Outer Banks will resume filming its fifth season on Aug. 14 at the Socastee Swing Bridge near Myrtle Beach. The production will close the bridge and a section of Dick Pond Road from 10 a.m. to about 8 p.m. — state officials arranged the schedule to avoid disrupting bus routes before school starts.  The Post and Courier

  • Myrtle Beach High School was fined nearly $8,000 after athletic eligibility issues were confirmed in its sports program.  WMBF News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Conway City Council approved roughly $26,000 to purchase five water sensors that will be placed at the Riverwalk, Kingston Lake trestle, and in Crabtree Swamp areas—locations chosen for their flood risks. The sensors will provide real-time water levels on an online dashboard and help city staff monitor flooding in the coming months.  The Post and Courier
