COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce held a police appreciation dinner Wednesday evening in Myrtle Beach, with King One Real Properties International sponsoring the event. Chamber President Jimmy Gray said the dinner helped build strong ties between local police officers and the business community.  WPDE

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Brian Miklaszewski became the full-time general manager at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club in June after working there since 2007—earning his role with years of dedication and excellent service. His leadership is set to keep the club running smoothly as it hosts events like the ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic.  My Horry News
  • A new strip mall is under construction in Socastee. The Silver Creek Retail Center will feature several stores (a nail salon, laundromat, vape shop, mini mart and ice cream shop) and new apartment buildings along Socastee Boulevard, though no opening date has been announced.  WFXB Fox TV

CRIME NEWS

  • A Murrells Inlet couple, Robin and Valerie Joseph, pled guilty to a fraud scheme that stole more than $1.4m — they used credit cards for cruises, gift cards, and expensive bird cages over many years and now face federal prison terms.  The Post and Courier
  • An unoccupied car was found in a pond near Bellaria Way on Thursday — Horry County Fire Rescue responded at 11:09 a.m. as dive team crews set up a line for towing crews to pull the vehicle while the South Carolina Highway Patrol investigates.  WPDE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A judge dismissed former Horry County Schools security chief David Beaty's wrongful termination lawsuit on July 30—ending his claim after he was placed on administrative leave following a 2024 incident at Myrtle Beach Middle School. His attorney said his team will wait for the written ruling before deciding on next steps.  The Post and Courier
  • Two new Carolina Forest elementary schools, Ten Oaks and Pine Island, held ribbon cutting ceremonies on July 31 and are set to welcome students on August 18. The new schools address overcrowding—River Oaks reached 166% capacity, Ocean Bay 144% and Carolina Forest 136%—and cost about $128 million to build.  My Horry News

  • Gov. Henry McMaster signed the Hands-Free and Distracted Driving Act during a ceremonial event on Thursday morning at 11 a.m.+ The law bans drivers from holding any electronic device while driving and will go into effect on September 1.  WFXB
