COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Brass at the Beach will return to Myrtle Beach on July 29 at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium where six marching bands will compete in a judged show. Bands will arrive on July 28 to rehearse for a 7:45 p.m. performance Tuesday — local high schools and a Brunswick County school will host the groups.  My Horry News

CRIME NEWS

  • Horry County Police are investigating a road rage shooting in the Longs area after reports indicate that shots were fired.  WMBF News
  • On July 16, the South Carolina Court of Appeals upheld a jury decision that Lack’s Beach Service must pay more than $20 million to the family of Zerihun Wolde, a 2019 drowning victim whose lifeguards lacked proper training—focusing on selling concessions instead of warning about rip currents.  My Horry News

  • Bassist Marc Serio of the Paul Grimshaw Band performed at Dead Dog Saloon on July 23 from 7-10:30 p.m.—he will perform at Brookgreen Gardens on July 26 from 6-10 p.m. as part of the ongoing Summer Light: Art by Night series.  The Post and Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • An interim police chief was named for the Surfside Beach Police Department on July 23rd. Officials say the appointment will keep the department running + a search for a permanent chief is underway.  WMBF News
  • City officials opened a canal on July 23 for public use on 800 acres of former Santee Cooper land as part of a plan to transform a former power plant site into a 150-acre recreational hub. Leaders will spend the next 18 to 24 months adding an inland beach, a 100-slip marina, and a 3.5-mile Riverwalk extension — key steps to boost outdoor activities.  The Post and Courier
  • The Socastee Swing Bridge will close on July 29 from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.—Netflix’s Outer Banks crew will film in the area and drivers will face detours on Dick Pond Road.  The Post and Courier

HEALTH NEWS

  • Theresa O’Quinn now volunteers to drive patients from the American Cancer Center to treatment appointments (as part of the Road to Recovery Program) to ease their stress during cancer care. She was moved to help after her own family faced long battles with the disease (her father fought for 20 years and her mother needed transportation for care).  WPDE

SPORTS NEWS

  • Officials announced the 2026 ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic will be held May 7-10 at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club with 120 players competing; discounted tickets are available for military and first responders - children 15 and younger will be admitted free. Tournament director Darren Nelson said the event is part of a four-year commitment by the PGA TOUR and that the course layout will remain unchanged from last year.  WPDE
