  • Little mermaid Journey celebrated her sixth birthday on July 18 when she became a mermaid for a day at Ripley’s Aquarium in Myrtle Beach—granted by the Make-A-Wish Foundation with help from family and friends. Journey, who has sickle cell, got a morning makeover and a blue-carpet ride that made her day truly special.  My Horry News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • North Myrtle Beach leaders approved a plan on July 21 that clears the way for a new 7-Eleven to be built in the Palmetto Coast Industrial Park to serve local workers and residents. The 4,824-square-foot store is designed with a coastal look, has dual fuel canopies and 25 parking spaces—final council approval is pending two more readings.  My Horry News

CRIME NEWS

  • Police reported that 42-year-old Waltez Latham was fatally shot at 340 Waties Drive around 4 a.m. on July 22 in Murrells Inlet while another person was injured and taken to a hospital—and officers are investigating the case.  My Horry News

  • A historical marker honoring the Waccamaw Tribe was unveiled at the Tribal Grounds in Aynor on July 20—acting chief Cheryl Cali said it is important for preserving the tribe’s history as descendants of the Dimery Settlement.  WPDE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Myrtle Beach City Council passed a new juvenile curfew measure on Tuesday, July 22, which restricts those under 18 from being out between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. unless with a parent—businesses have given positive feedback and the curfew is now in effect.  WPDE
  • A Murrells Inlet fisherman and nonprofit Shoreline Shark Conservation filed suit against county leaders to stop Horry County’s long-standing ban on land-based shark fishing — they argue the rule conflicts with state law and jeopardizes their business. County officials had not been served with the complaint as of July 22 and did not comment.  The Post and Courier
  • Captain Jonathan Evans from the Myrtle Beach Fire Dept. spoke with Greg about hurricane safety and the risks of heat during summer — he urged residents to prepare for storms and high temperatures.  WFXB Fox TV
