ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A lightning strike caused a house fire on the 2000 block of Placid Way that damaged the attic and displaced three residents while fire crews responded at 8:24 p.m.—the incident is now under control with no reported injuries.  WMBF News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Frontier Airlines will launch a new route from MYR to Trenton, New Jersey that will run twice per week with fares as low as $39—this service gives beach goers and other travelers another affordable option and adds to MYR's four non-stop destinations.  WFXB Fox TV

CRIME NEWS

  • On July 3, Myrtle Beach police pursued 40-year-old Timothy Elbert Aland in his white Toyota 4Runner after he ignored orders to stop and nearly struck a pedestrian along Ocean Boulevard, and he now faces charges including assault, DUI and drug possession before he was detained at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center—details from a recent FOIA release.  WPDE
  • A police report detailed a Myrtle Beach chase in which a man allegedly hit an officer and now faces multiple charges.  WMBF News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Horry County Schools announced plans to upgrade athletic facilities at nine schools with new tennis courts, gymnasium and ballfield scoreboards, and improved seating on varsity baseball and softball fields. Construction begins this year at Aynor and Conway — Carolina Forest and Green Sea Floyds next year, Myrtle Beach and St. James in 2027, Loris and Socastee in 2028, and North Myrtle Beach in 2029.  WFXB Fox TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Garbage at the county landfill increased by 27% since 2015 as population and tourism grew, so the Horry County Solid Waste Authority plans to build three new landfill sites and boost recycling efforts to extend the facility’s life. Officials say that building two class II landfills and one class III landfill—if permitted—may delay the planned closure from 2050 to 2060 or later.  My Horry News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Myrtle Beach City Government announced on Thursday an $84.5 million allocation for public safety in its 2026 fiscal budget that will fund police, fire, and capital improvements — including a new fire station on Robert Grissom Parkway. The budget increases also include salary hikes for police officers starting July 1 and investments in new equipment like a virtual reality training simulator and cardiac monitors for firefighters.  WPDE

SPORTS NEWS

  • Dennis Rodman, William Shatner and other sports legends will visit a trading card expo in Myrtle Beach next month at the John T. Rhodes Myrtle Beach Sports Center. The expo runs August 8-9 and celebrity guests (including Ricky Williams and Billy Sims) will be available for autographs and photos on August 9.  The Post and Courier
