Good morning, Myrtle Beach. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 5th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Over 1,000 people ran in an Independence Day Run at The Market Common on July 4, with proceeds benefiting the Grand Strand Humane Society. Race organizers said high registration numbers forced an early close to sign-ups — showing a strong return to pre-COVID levels.  WPDE

CRIME NEWS

  • On Thursday night, Myrtle Beach police arrested Timothy Elbert Aland, 40, after a car chase on Ocean Boulevard in which his Toyota 4 Runner hit a bicycle officer and a police vehicle—he was charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, DUI, drug offenses, and several other traffic violations, and he is held at J. Reuben Long Detention Center on a $2,2950 bond.  WPDE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Surfside Beach held its 16th annual Salute from the Shore flyover on Friday to honor the 4th of July as military jets passed overhead and residents displayed massive American flags. Mayor Robert Krouse said the town's new flag display idea sparked community pride—marking a memorable change in the celebration.  WPDE
  • Myrtle Beach set a curfew stopping anyone under 18 from walking downtown alone from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. to help keep people safe after recent violence among young people — MBPD said no curfew violations were issued in the past two days and officials may extend the rule after July 7.  WMBF News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers say that mosquito bites in South Carolina summers are mainly driven by skin chemicals—especially higher levels of carboxylic acids that attract these pests. Health officials advise using EPA-approved repellents with DEET, picaridin or lemon eucalyptus oil to ward off bites—removing standing water can also reduce mosquito breeding sites.  The Post and Courier
