  • Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii debuted in Surfside Beach at 1708 highway 17 business—owned by local husband and wife team B.J. and Dawn Kinard. The cafe offers handcrafted coffees, smoothies, an all day food menu, and merchandise with a Hawaiian twist and is open daily from 6 am to 6 pm.  WFXB Fox TV

CRIME NEWS

  • A 17-year-old from Conway was held at the J. Reuben Long County Detention Center after being charged with terrorism for allegedly threatening property with a destructive device and using or possessing a weapon of mass destruction—authorities say he may have sought ties with ISIS.  WPDE
  • A 31 year old woman is charged with murder after an eleven year old was found dead at a Carolina Forest home last week—police said the child suffered blunt force injuries and seven other children from the home are now in DSS custody.  WPDE
  • A man was arrested on Monday for throwing multiple kittens out of a car window on 15th Avenue South in Myrtle Beach—Matthew Blaine Swanson, 53, was charged with animal cruelty and is held on a $5,000 bond.  WPDE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Capt. Jonathan Evans of the Myrtle Beach Fire Department warned residents to use caution with fireworks as the 4th of July nears, noting that displays are best enjoyed at professional shows and are not allowed on commercial properties or the beach with a 10:00 p.m. cutoff except on the 4th of July and New Year’s Eve—The department will accept applications from Friday, June 20th to July 7th for candidates at least 18 years old with a high school diploma and a clean record for a 26-week recruit school at their academy or HGTC Grand Strand Campus.  WFXB Fox TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Food Lion Feeds will launch its sixth annual Summers Without Hunger campaign to help children gain access to nutritious meals during the summer—addressing childhood food insecurity. Through July 15, local customers can support the effort by purchasing a reusable shopping bag for two dollars—while volunteers and associates assist local feeding partner agencies.  WPDE

SPORTS NEWS

  • Melissa Stalvey from Myrtle Beach cares for Maddox II, Coastal Carolina University’s 9-year-old live mascot who appears at tailgates and games while her family has raised the bird since 2011. Nine years ago, Maddox I died on June 30, 2016 when the Chanticleers won the College World Series and Stalvey is now preparing Maddox III to take over the role—hoping the mascot stays a key part of the team’s spirit.  The Post and Courier
