COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Paddling for PAALS will take place this Saturday near Murrells Inlet Marshwalk—an event that supports training service dogs for people with disabilities—and will finish with a paddle party at Sloppy Jose's from 11 a.m. — 1 p.m.  WPDE

CRIME NEWS

  • Myrtle Beach Police say an affidavit details that 18-year-old Jawarren Bethea was arrested after a shooting on 8th Avenue North where officers found three .380 casings—he now faces gun charges and was released on a $20,000 bond.  WPDE
  • On May 26th, Horry County police arrested 23-year-old James Bryson Smith after officers found a fatally shot dog near Galivants Ferry — two red shotgun shells were recovered near the scene and a witness said a green GMC pickup drove away before Smith was released on a $2,500 bond.  WPDE
  • The trial continues today for Meagan Jackson and Christopher Dontell, who face charges of murder and criminal conspiracy in the 2020 death of Gregory Rice. Detective Reggie Hotaling testified and evidence, including a still picture of a van from October 2nd, was shown in court—fueling the ongoing case.  WPDE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • This summer, children and teens 18 and under in South Carolina will get free healthy meals through the Summer Break Café and Seamless Summer Option programs run by the South Carolina Department of Education—over 1,200 sites including schools, libraries, parks, churches, and community centers will serve meals from June to August.  WPDE

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the South Carolina Dept. of Natural Resources hosted a dedication ceremony to expand Lewis Ocean Bay Heritage Preserve by acquiring 353 acres from Conway Medical Center—this new area protects rare species like the endangered Venus flytrap and will be available for outdoor recreation.  WPDE

HEALTH NEWS

  • Tidelands Health announced it will build a network of integrated emergency and urgent care centers with adjacent primary care offices, starting with a 12,000 square-foot complex at Forestbrook Road and Forest Edge Drive in Myrtle Beach later this year. The system — designed to quickly triage patients — will expand with additional facilities along U.S. 501 and River Oaks Boulevard and will be the first of its kind in the state.  My Horry News

  • Chanticleer fans rallied in Conway to send off Coastal Carolina University’s baseball team — the No. 13 national seed with a record of 53-11 — as it will travel to Omaha on Friday, June 13 at 2 p.m. ET to face the Wildcats in the NCAA Men’s College World Series Championship.  WPDE
  • Myrtle Beach City Council voted 6—1 on Tuesday to agree to a 30-year lease for Pelicans Stadium so the Myrtle Beach Pelicans will stay on the Grand Strand after months of uncertainty. The lease sets rents at $850,000 per year for 20 years and $950,000 per year for the last 10 years following Horry County’s $8.25 million buyout while the team’s chairman added an extra $100,000 for the first 10 years.  WFXB Fox TV
