CRIME NEWS

  • A woman charged with involvement in the 2020 murder of Gregory Rice will begin trial Monday, June 9—her co-defendant, a former deputy coroner who pleaded guilty and agreed to testify, is awaiting sentencing.  WPDE

CULTURE NEWS

  • A bird’s-eye view shows crews setting up stages for the 10th Annual Carolina Country Music Fest that kicked off Thursday in downtown Myrtle Beach—officials had put temporary road closures and new traffic patterns in place to ease travel during the event.  WMBF News
  • The 10th Annual Carolina Country Music Fest kicked off Thursday in Myrtle Beach when festival gates opened at 3 p.m. and a special concert featuring Rascal Flatts, Tyler Hubbard — Colt Ford was held at the Burroughs and Chapin Pavilion Place, with limited tickets and a parking and shuttle service from the former Myrtle Square Mall available.  WMBF News

  • Coastal Carolina University, near Myrtle Beach, named James Winebrake as its new president—he will replace Michael Benson on July 7. Winebrake served at UNC Wilmington and RIT and was chosen after a nationwide search that included input from faculty, staff, and community members.  The Post and Courier

  • A naval ship that honors a former South Carolinian who escaped slavery kept its name—while ships named for Thurgood Marshall and Harriet Tubman may be renamed after a Defense Secretary order to review ship names.  The Post and Courier

HEALTH NEWS

  • Officials at CCMF 2025 advised festival attendees to drink water, eat full meals, and wear comfortable shoes instead of high heels to avoid dehydration — especially if they drink alcohol. Medical teams from Tidelands Health and local fire departments were on site to help anyone who felt unwell.  WPDE
