COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Myrtle Beach will pilot beach-accessible wheelchairs as city leaders plan to reintroduce the service. Chairs donated by Luke Sharp will be placed at three coastal spots (15th Ave South, 2nd Ave North, 53rd Ave North) and the plan will go to city council soon.  WPDE
  • The Iris Garden Club, celebrating 75 years, brightens Conway with award-winning flower beds, community projects and an afterschool program for children; it will mark National Garden Week June 7-13 with daily displays honoring its legacy.  My Horry News

  • Ole Smoky Distillery and Yee-Haw Brewing Co. is now open at Broadway at the Beach, giving Myrtle Beach residents a new place to enjoy local brews and spirits today.  WPDE

  • The Myrtle Beach SkyWheel is celebrating its 15th anniversary with a yearlong lineup of events and promotions starting later this year at its beachfront location. Visitors can look forward to special rides & prizes during the celebrations.  WPDE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • During Wednesday's forum at the Carolina Forest Civic Association, Horry County school board candidates (including chair hopefuls Darrell Ricketts and Melanie Wellons) outlined plans for handling student growth, technology in classrooms, and school expansion ahead of the primary on June 9.  WPDE

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Smoke from two prescribed burns on Sandy Island likely affected Horry County as drought conditions persisted. One burn covering 730 acres took place on Tuesday by The Nature Conservancy, and a 200-acre burn was active Wednesday by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Horry County’s drought index reached 584).  WPDE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • USACE reps met with county officials in Conway on May 15 to study flood risks along the Waccamaw River as part of a $3.9 million study. A Chief’s Report is expected this summer and projects may enter design in 2028 with construction planned between 2030 and 2034.  My Horry News
  • Captain Jonathan Evans of the Myrtle Beach Fire Department offered safety tips today as the busy summer season nears. He reminded locals to heed burn ban rules, fireworks laws and updated beach access signs amid ongoing drought conditions.  WFXB Fox TV
