  • NextEra Energy and Dominion Energy announced plans to merge on Monday. The new company will serve about 10 million customers and provide $2.25 billion in bill credits to Dominion Energy customers in South Carolina, Virginia, and North Carolina while keeping Dominion Energy SC’s headquarters in Cayce with Keller Kissam as CEO.  WPDE

  • The new True Crime Museum Serial Killers The Experience will open Saturday, May 23 in Myrtle Beach with artifacts and displays from notorious serial killer cases. It will be open 10 am to 6 pm and host True Crime and Dine events on June 12 at Swig and Swine.  WPDE

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Tourism in Myrtle Beach shows mixed signals ahead of Memorial Day weekend, as the One Flight Myrtle Beach Classic boosted attendance from May 6-10 while branded hotel occupancy fell. Visit Myrtle Beach is working with local businesses to promote value amid rising travel costs.  WPDE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Palmetto Literacy Council is seeking volunteers for its upcoming Adult Spelling Bee fundraiser next year, and the group provides 2 hours weekly of free or reduced-fee tutoring in reading, writing, and math for both children and adults (the council welcomes questions about joining).  WFXB Fox TV
  • Horry County Schools will raise teacher pay with a 1.6% longevity increase and a 3% cost-of-living adjustment, bringing starting salaries to just over $54K in 2027. Support staff will receive a 25-cent hourly boost, though some officials (staff express concerns) expect further pay to eventually reach $18 per hour.  WPDE

  • The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory as king tides are forecast to bring minor flooding to the Grand Strand today in Horry and Georgetown counties. Residents should monitor local updates for any water level changes.  WPDE

  • The Myrtle Beach Police announced traffic changes for Memorial Day weekend; from 6am May 22 until 6am May 25 drivers will use only southbound lanes on Ocean Boulevard between 29th Avenue North and South Kings Highway — stoplight-controlled avenues remain open while cut-through routes on Chester Street, Withers Drive and Yaupon Drive are closed.  WFXB Fox TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Straus Family Creamery has recalled several organic ice cream flavors after detecting possible metal fragments. The recall affects pint-sized Vanilla Bean, Strawberry, Cookie Dough & Mint Chip as well as quarter-sized Strawberry & Dutch Chocolate sold in South Carolina and other states, and consumers are advised to discard the products.  WFXB Fox TV
