COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteers are donating their time to help run the OneFlight Myrtle Beach Classic this week—hundreds of local community members ensure the tournament runs smoothly while supporting charities like Blue Star Mothers, Boys and Girls Club, and Champion Autism Network. Returning volunteers said the event brings positive attention to Myrtle Beach and offers a chance to work together with neighbors.  WPDE

CRIME NEWS

  • Myrtle Beach Police Department released an incident report on the Ocean Boulevard shooting on Saturday night—during an altercation a person fired into a crowd, injuring 11 and killing one when a responding officer discharged their weapon—and SLED is investigating the incident.  WPDE
  • On Friday, Horry County Police arrested Alexandra Stadelmann at a Conway home on 20 animal care charges after community tips of hoarding led officers to seize 150 animals—dogs, cats, birds and rabbits—from the property.  WPDE
  • On May 8th, Horry County police ended an attempted traffic stop with a chase — resulting in the seizure of 25 pounds of fentanyl.  WMBF News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Little River will host the 43rd Annual World Famous Blue Crab Festival from May 17-18, closing the historic waterfront to traffic and lining Mineola, Riverview, and Waterfront Avenues with about 250 vendors selling seafood, arts & crafts from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The festival is expected to draw over 20,000 visitors and will feature live entertainment and a free kids zone.  My Horry News
  • Thousands of bikers from all over arrived for the 86th annual Spring Myrtle Beach Bike Rally which kicked off yesterday in Murrells Inlet—this 10-day event features a new welcome center, flat track motorcycle racing at Lakeview Motor Speedway, rides, shows and vendors along 50 miles of coastline. The rally will run until May 18.  WPDE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Coastal Carolina University Board of Trustees met on May 7 to honor outgoing President Michael T. Benson and begin the search for his successor. The board has advertised the position + reviewed applications and hired Funk Associates to assist while Benson will serve until June 30 before starting at West Virginia University in July.  My Horry News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Carolina lawmakers passed Senate Bills 28 and 29 on Thursday to make it a felony to create, share, or own AI-generated sexual images of children and non-consensual explicit images—Governor McMaster must still sign the bills while Attorney General Alan Wilson praised them as a win for victims. The law also covers morphed images and comes after more than 7,000 reports of such content were received by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.  WPDE
