EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Horry County School board reviewed a proposed $678 million budget that sets aside nearly $9.8 million to raise teacher pay to at least $52,000 a year—adding longevity and specialized training bonuses—while keeping taxes unchanged; a public hearing and final vote will take place on June 2. Today, the plan aims to support educators without burdening taxpayers.  WPDE

  • Jennifer Spivey Foley delivered an impassioned plea to Horry County Council yesterday urging officials to reopen the investigation into her brother’s 2023 road rage shooting death on Camp Swamp Road — she called for a special prosecutor independent of the AG’s office and noted concerns over police conduct and new evidence uncovered in the case.  My Horry News

  • The Myrtle Beach SkyWheel will glow red on May 9 to honor nurses during National Nurses Week from May 6 to 12 (an effort led by the American Nurses Association to recognize the work of over five million registered nurses). More than 20 South Carolina landmarks will join the display as part of a national campaign (aimed at highlighting nurse contributions).  WPDE

  • Nathan Franks, a senior with the South Carolina men’s golf team, won the final spot at the upcoming ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic after a one-shot victory at The Q — edging out Joe Hooks and Tyler Watts on March 3 at TPC Myrtle Beach. He said his win was a dream come true and ABC 15 will cover the tournament on Thursday.  WPDE
  • More than 20 HGTC students volunteered early this week at Dunes Club to prep the course for practice rounds ahead of ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic, starting work as early as 3:30 a.m. + taking shifts through morning and evening.
