COMMUNITY NEWS

  • North Myrtle Beach is hosting a free Fishing with Friends event over the weekend (details provided by the City) that offers locals a chance to enjoy local fishing on community waters.  WPDE
  • Myrtle Beach leaders met Tuesday morning to consider restoring beach accessibility as Adaptive Surf Project founder Luke Sharp offered 10 wheelchairs and a mat for travelers with mobility issues. Some officials raised insurance concerns but signaled willingness to explore solutions — the city may soon improve beach services.  WPDE

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Saturday, May 2 the 30th Annual Blessing of the Inlet will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Belin Memorial United Methodist Church; a ceremony begins at 10 a.m. and free admission, parking and kids activities (double waterslide, moon bounce, balloon blaster) are offered.  WFXB Fox TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Coastal Carolina University groups are responding to a viral video on Facebook showing an individual using a racial slur that has drawn over 700,000 views. The Black Student Association and Social Justice Club have called on university officials to review the incident and bolster campus inclusivity.  WPDE
  • Dr. Marilyn 'Murph' Fore, president of HGTC since 2017, will retire on July 31 after more than 51 years of service. The college expanded its programs and will soon partner with Horry County Schools & McLeod Hospital to launch a CNA program in northwest Horry County.  My Horry News
  • Coastal Carolina University broke its own fundraising record with its tenth annual Giving Teal Tuesday campaign. The campus event marked a milestone in community support and set a new standard for the school.  WMBF News

  • Myrtle Beach City Council approved a PUD for an oceanfront resort owned by Drury Development Corporation Tuesday, Apr. 28. The 2.31-acre project — including a hotel, pedestrian corridor, and parking garage — will move forward with final property exchanges planned for May 12.  My Horry News
  • On Tuesday, April 28, the SC House passed a resolution naming Conway as the Holiday Capital of South Carolina at the State House. Conway officials accepted the designation (highlighting the city’s festive traditions and tourism boost) and celebrated the resolution's local impact.  My Horry News
  • The South Carolina Department of Transportation held its annual Workers Memorial ceremony on Tuesday to honor employees who died on duty. Officials offered tributes and held a moment of silence for the fallen.  WPDE
