  • Horry County Police arrested Cain Andrew Francis, 23, of Conway on April 19 for assault, weapon, and narcotic charges after officers responded to a shooting and recovered a stolen GLOCK 19—an officer even cut his pant leg to retrieve it—while they found bags of blue and white powder.  WPDE
  • Horry County Police are searching for 78-year-old Patrick Owens, who was last heard from on Thursday while driving his maroon-colored 2011 Buick Lacrosse (SC plate VT 16310).  WMBF News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Local environmental advocates report that the Black River in the Pee Dee basin shows dangerous PFAS levels that far exceed EPA standards and may harm fish and wildlife—while lawsuits target only drinking water sources, community groups plan a meeting in May to urge tighter state rules. This effort seeks to hold polluters accountable for the forever chemicals contaminating the river.  The Post and Courier

  • Sen. Stephen Goldfinch introduced a bill on April 22 to criminalize coercive control nearly a year after Mica Miller died on April 27, 2024—defining the offense as repeated behavior that causes mental distress and fear of violence, punishable by up to 10 years in prison or a $10,000 fine. Previous bills on the issue failed, and supporters hope this proposal gains momentum in the legislative session.  The Post and Courier
