CRIME NEWS

  • Police are investigating a shooting that occurred in the Socastee area on Friday—officials say details remain limited as they work to determine what happened.  WMBF News
  • Critical injuries were reported in a shooting on Friday off Ivystone Drive in Socastee—police said all involved have been accounted for and there is no threat to the community.  WPDE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Coastal Carolina University is closely monitoring the situation after several international students at the University of South Carolina had their visas revoked following an Executive Order signed on January 30; Director Jerry Rashid said none of CCU's enrolled international students were affected (statement provided to ABC 15).  WPDE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State lawmakers passed a bill on Wednesday to ban cellphone use while driving and sent it to the Senate—if approved and signed by the governor, the law will take effect in 2026 and join 32 other states with similar rules. The measure aims to make driving safer by reducing distractions on the road.  WPDE

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Less than two months after a developer bought pastor JP Miller’s former church, the 2.18-acre Market Common property was sold on April 9 for $2.6 million to a church not tied to the Miller family—this sale paid $450,000 more than the previous purchase.  The Post and Courier
