ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Crews began rebuilding dunes along Cherry Grove coast using clean sand from the Tidewater spoil basin — a method different from traditional beach renourishment — to strengthen the natural barrier protecting local homes and businesses; officials expect the project to finish by early May.  WMBF News
  • Crews contained a 7-acre grass fire in the Little River area on Wednesday afternoon in Horry County + officials confirmed no injuries and that the blaze is under control.  WMBF News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County officials in Horry and Georgetown enacted burn bans on April 8 as dry, windy conditions increased wildfire risk. The bans forbid all outdoor burning, including yard debris + recreational fires, and remain until further notice to keep the community safe.  The Post and Courier
  • Myrtle Beach officials discussed a pilot program on April 7 to allow wind-driven beach shades (including Shibumi Shade and Solbello) in less crowded sections near residential areas to trial a safer alternative to umbrellas. HEALTH NEWS

  • Attorney General Alan Wilson warned that a new synthetic opioid (cychlorphine) has been found in the state and is difficult to detect since even small amounts can cause overdose, so he urged residents to avoid unknown drugs and report suspicious activity.  WPDE
  • Champion Autism Network urged families to check water safety as spring and summer vacations approach after several drowning incidents involving children and teens with autism. The group said nonverbal individuals and those who elope need close supervision and specialized swim classes to lower risks+help ensure safe access to water.  WMBF News
