COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Farmers markets reopen to support local growers. Surfside Beach opens Tuesdays (10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.), North Myrtle Beach on Fridays (10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.), and Conway on Saturdays (8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.); additional markets include Market Common, Pawleys Hammock Shops, and CCU on Wed.   • Registration is open for the annual A Day of Hope event for local children. Sheila Karsevar explained that kids will receive backpacks of school supplies, dental and vision screenings, haircuts, new shoes and socks, and lunch plus a message of hope.  WFXB Fox TV
  • A North Myrtle Beach congregation marks Easter with a seaside seashell painting event held on the beach at 6th Ave South and Ocean Boulevard (bringing community members together to celebrate the season). The creative event offers a fresh twist on traditional festivities.  WMBF News

CRIME NEWS

  • Coastal Carolina University’s Pi Kappa Phi fraternity is being investigated after a fall trip to Charleston reportedly involved hazing that left several members injured and one student sick, and the fraternity is on probation through May 31.  WPDE

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Conscious Soul Spring Festival is happening this weekend at Grand Park Lake in The Market Common. The free outdoor event runs Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., featuring live music, art, yoga, workshops, food trucks, a kids area (with baby chicks) and an Easter service.  WFXB Fox TV
  • A group behind the SC (Where the Revolutionary War was Won) license plates is co-hosting a series of talks at the Horry County Museum to explain the state's role in the Revolution. The organizers will announce session dates soon.  WPDE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • After Howard Barnard (a retired fighter pilot) resigned on April 1, the Horry County Board of Education began the process to fill the District 5 vacancy for Surfside and St. James; filings open April 8, interviews follow on May 28, and the new member is sworn in June 8.  My Horry News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The South Carolina Department of Environmental Services has launched an online tool via MyCoast South Carolina to help residents report abandoned boats more easily by county. Officials say it will speed up cleanups of hazardous vessels that pose risks to the environment & public safety.  WPDE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The board approved demolition of the historic triangular Kozy Korner building at 819 and 821 Main Street on April 2. Former Mayor Brenda Bethune and husband Brown Bethune plan to rebuild it to resemble the original design (dating to the 1930s), with work scheduled to finish summer 2027.  The Post and Courier

  • Mortgage rates have been rising steadily as Freddie Mac shows 30-year fixed loans now average 6.46% and threaten to slow spring homebuying in Myrtle Beach. Buyers could pay over $100 more per month and are advised to shop around for the best offers.  WPDE
