COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Friends of the Waccamaw Library will host the Annual Garden Tour, Blossoms for Books on Saturday, May 17, where visitors will view residential gardens and explore pop-up shops. Carpooling in groups of three or more will enter riders to win a $50 gift card to Bistro 217 — the event promises a spring celebration at the library.  WPDE

CRIME NEWS

  • Myrtle Beach’s violent crime rate fell nearly 50% over the last decade, with 2,578 incidents reported in 2024—Police Chief Amy Prock confirmed the drop during a City Council briefing on April 1.  The Post and Courier
  • Dequan Rashad Wilson, 29, of Hemingway was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty on Tuesday to two counts for possession with intent to distribute fentanyl — his charges stem from incidents in Conway and Myrtle Beach.  WPDE
  • Robert Alexander of Tennessee filed a lawsuit on Jan. 22 against Todd Keith Massey II— a former Loris city clerk— over their joint ownership of a Myrtle Beach pest control company. He seeks $49,000 in reimbursement, his share of profits and legal fees after Massey allegedly misused business funds.  My Horry News
  • Myrtle Beach Police closed the investigation into Chris Skinner’s 2021 drowning on March 31—citing no evidence of a crime—while the Horry County Coroner’s Office continues to probe the case.  The Post and Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Coastal Carolina University received a $50K grant to help send a small satellite made in Conway into orbit. The grant will support its space research—helping test new technology for future missions.  WMBF News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The South Carolina Forestry Commission lifted the State Forester's Burning Ban for Greenville, Horry, Oconee, Pickens and Spartanburg counties at noon on Wednesday due to improved weather conditions—low humidity and calmer winds reduced fire risks; the statewide ban for the other 41 counties was lifted Monday. Residents must notify the commission before any outdoor burns as wildfire risks continue to be monitored.  WPDE

HEALTH NEWS

  • McLeod Health held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 1 for its new 20,000 square foot same day surgery center at Carolina Forest that cost $20M and is now the Grand Strand’s largest outpatient facility. Construction crews working on the 48 bed hospital provided the backdrop—officials said the center will soon offer four operating rooms, two procedure rooms and 17 rooms for patients before and after operations.  My Horry News
  • Claire Chapin Epps YMCA in Myrtle Beach is offering a 60 minute group exercise class called Power Thru Parkinson's on Mondays and Thursdays at 12:30 p.m. during Parkinson's Awareness Month to help people with Parkinson's or movement disorders build strength, balance and coordination.  WPDE
