  • Myrtle Beach native Army Staff Sgt. James Jamie Santos was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery on Thursday—joining family members already interred there. Army Chaplain Timothy Stokes said Santos showed pride in his service, including his role in the Persian Gulf War.  WPDE

  • Chipotle Mexican Grill opened a new location in Myrtle Beach on March 31 with the first Chipotlane drive-thru pick-up for digital orders without leaving the car. The restaurant at 8006 N. CRIME NEWS

  • Myrtle Beach Police reported that crime dropped nearly 50% since 2015 when incidents fell from over 4,900 to fewer than 2,600 and the department is adding officers and new cameras to handle a record 133,000 calls for service—details shared at its 2024 review.  WPDE
  • Brandon Strickland resigned as deputy chief of the Horry County Police on March 11 after learning he was under investigation for policy violations and facing a pending criminal probe, and his attorney said he will return to law enforcement once cleared—official records confirm he was not involved in a 2023 shooting investigation.  The Post and Courier
  • Lawrence Sinclair Grant, 36 from North Myrtle Beach, pleaded guilty to drug and gun charges after officers arrested him in September 2023 when officials found crack cocaine, a handgun, a scale and cash during a traffic stop—he was sentenced on Monday to 10 years for the drug offense and five years for the firearm charge.  WPDE

  • NMB Fire Rescue Brush 4 headed back home at 8 a.m. Tuesday, April 1 after assisting with the Table Rock Complex Fire in Pickens County—its crew completed three deployments from Wednesday to Tuesday while supporting upstate firefighting efforts.  WPDE

HEALTH NEWS

  • South Carolina recorded 2,157 overdose deaths in 2023, a 6.1% drop from 2,296 in 2022—the first decline in over a decade as noted by public health officials. However, 15 counties saw increases, with some reporting over a 100% rise and fentanyl involved in 1,550 deaths.  WPDE

  • Sharon Hedrick from Conway, a top Paralympic athlete who won the first US Paralympic Olympic gold medal, is a finalist for the US Olympic and Paralympic Hall of Fame. Voting on her induction will close until (April 14) as her career inspires the next generation of athletes.  WPDE
