COMMUNITY NEWS

  • North Myrtle Beach's annual St. Patrick's Day Parade and Festival, held Saturday at 9 a.m., drew about 35,000 people along Main Street with over 100 floats and 130 vendors boosting local business and community spirit—city officials noted the event's tradition and economic impact.  WPDE

CRIME NEWS

  • On Thursday afternoon near Freemont Road outside Longs, a shooting left 53-year-old Don Johnson dead and another injured; 20-year-old Da’Shauan Kamarion Knox was arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder — local residents worry about student safety during school pickup times.  WMBF News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Former Horry County Schools security coordinator David Beaty was placed on leave after a gun incident at Myrtle Beach Middle School and is suing the district and board member Howard Barnard—he alleges that unfair handling of security measures led to defamation and reputational loss. Beaty, who was not rehired after his contract expired in June 2024, seeks a jury trial and damages for the mental anguish he suffered.  My Horry News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A survey by the South Carolina State Election Commission found that 93% of voters trust state elections and 98% said registering to vote is easy. The study of 504 voters who took part in the 2024 presidential race shows most find polling places clean, safe, and well-organized—boosting confidence in current voting practices.  WPDE
  • Myrtle Beach officials said Broadway Street between Highway 501 and the Ninth Avenue North intersection will close for utility work in the Arts & Innovation District as crews install underground utilities and remove concrete medians—drivers will follow detour signs and traffic barrels. The road is expected to reopen in May—officials will announce the final closure date soon.  WMBF News
