COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 61st annual Conway Kiwanis Pancake Supper at Conway High School drew about 2,450 guests and saw 10,000 pancakes eaten over the weekend. Ticket prices increased from $9+ $10 to raise profits for local projects.  My Horry News
  • New Directions plans to expand its women’s shelter – local business owner Kate Curran of Fresh Brewed Coffee said at a recent city council meeting that the nonprofit must improve its operations to better serve those in need. It invited anyone with concerns to call the shelter.  WPDE
  • Savannah's Playground in Myrtle Beach reopened today after a $2M renovation improved play equipment and landscaping; locals can now enjoy the updated facility.  WMBF News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Downtribe (a reggae-influenced band known for inventing its own 'rastabilly' sound) will perform at the Hot Fish Club in Murrells Inlet on Mar. 6 from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. The band will play a mix of original songs and covers that showcase its unique style.  The Post and Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Horry County Literacy Council celebrated its 50th anniversary on Wednesday at Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce and has helped thousands with literacy tutoring over the last 50 years — addressing growing needs after the COVID-19 pandemic.  WMBF News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents raised concerns over wetlands and environmental impacts at the third SC 22 meeting near the Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge as they discussed 14 proposed routes. The Army Corps of Engineers is reviewing the proposals (including mitigation banks) and will select its top three routes by 2028.  WPDE

  • North Myrtle Beach City Council debated replacing a closed TGI Fridays with Chick-fil-A at Gator Hole Plaza on Highway 17 Monday. Council members raised concerns about the plaza’s single entrance — which may worsen traffic — and will workshop proposals to attract new business while maintaining safety.  WMBF News

  • The Garden City Pier (a landmark since 1992) is on sale for $15 million along the Grand Strand, and locals hope a future buyer will keep its historic charm.  WMBF News

  • Former elite marathoners Cole and Esther Atkins from Greenville will return to competitive running at the March 7 Myrtle Beach Marathon Elite Invitational. The pro event offers a $17,500 prize purse with 26.2-mile and 13.1-mile routes through Pelicans Ballpark and Ocean Boulevard.  The Post and Courier
  • Former Gamecocks coach Lou Holtz passed away at 89 in Orlando with his family by his side. He led Notre Dame to a national championship and finished his career with 249 wins, leaving a lasting mark on college football.  WMBF News
