COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Savannah’s Playground (the Palmetto State’s largest accessible park) is set to reopen in late February at The Market Common after $2 million in upgrades including new synthetic turf and sun shades. Contractors are finishing work on the project.  WFXB Fox TV
  • Midway fire launched a Community Connect program to help crews access key details during emergencies. Residents can create secure profiles with contact info plus essential notes like medical needs and gate codes.  WMBF News
  • Myrtle Beach is launching a beach renourishment project in Arcadian Shores today to improve coastal safety & boost visitor access.  WMBF News
  • The new Friends Centre at the Georgetown Library Centre held a soft opening last week and is now open in the former Heritage Center space. An official ribbon cutting is planned for 5:30 p.m. Feb. 24 and volunteers are needed to help staff the center in two-hour shifts.  WMBF News

  • Amazon is constructing a second delivery station near The Wizard Golf Club on Postal Way in Horry County, and it is expected to create dozens of local jobs as the company works with local partners on hiring updates and launch progress.  WMBF News

  • A Myrtle Beach local will perform on American Idol tonight and hopes his appearance will launch his music career—he aims to share his talent with viewers and bring home local pride.   WPDE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Horry County Schools is planning pay raises for teachers and staff to stay competitive with other districts. Officials said details are still in development and will be announced soon.  WMBF News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A proposal will protect nearly 6,000 acres along the Waccamaw River by expanding an 8,600 acre preserve as $19.5 million in funding has been approved for flood prevention in growing Horry (and Georgetown).  WPDE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Conway Fire announced Monday that it had adopted a one-year-old emotional support dog from Horry County Animal Care Center, which will live at the station with each shift. The department has not yet named the dog and urged the public to consider adopting.  WMBF News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Construction began Monday on the new $220 million South Strand Hospital in Myrtle Beach during a groundbreaking ceremony. Officials said the project is designed to improve access to quality care for local residents.  WMBF News
  • Dr. Paul Richardson at Conway Medical Center recommends the MMR vaccine to help prevent measles amid a historic outbreak and supports proposed legislation to improve vaccine access. Residents are urged to consult their providers for current vaccine guidelines.  WPDE
