COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Myrtle Beach Fire Department will host a charity hockey game on Saturday, Jan. 17, at 2 p.m. at Florence Center as CCU & MBFD face off to raise funds for cancer screenings for first responders.  WFXB Fox TV
  • Residents gathered at the Horry County Memorial Library Tuesday night to discuss a controversial landfill expansion project. The meeting focused on plans for development and community input on potential future changes.  WPDE

CULTURE NEWS

  • The annual Oysters & Art Festival returns this weekend in Myrtle Beach & will feature live music, art booths, and family-friendly activities.  WPDE
  • The feature film Learning You (shot on the Grand Strand a year ago) will debut Friday at Market Common.  WMBF News
  • WonderWorks Myrtle Beach is offering discounted after-dark tickets at $15 on weekdays from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in January and February 2026—guests can explore over 100 interactive exhibits including laser tag and an indoor ropes course.   • Multi-instrumentalist J.P. Taylor will perform today at Pawleys Island Tavern (the PIT) from 7-11 p.m. and may cover songs by James Taylor or Fleetwood Mac as he layers his live sound with a loop pedal.  The Post and Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than 6,500 students are attending a healthcare careers expo at Grand Strand today where they explore job options and connect with local experts.  WPDE
  • Two charter schools will open this fall in the former Myrtle Beach Golf Academy building on Mr- Joe White Avenue. Morning Star Academy will serve grades K-8 with a STEM focus while South Carolina Construction Academy will offer construction trades for grades 9-12, with enrollment now open.  WMBF News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A cold front brings windy conditions today with gusts near 30-40 mph and temperatures in the lower 40s, making it feel colder. Friday morning will be frigid with wind chills in the teens, and Sunday may see rain transitioning to snow if conditions change (updates soon).  WMBF News
  • Horry Co. officials assisted state agencies with a prescribed burn on Wednesday to manage vegetation and lower wildfire risk (a coordinated effort for improved local safety).  WPDE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Myrtle Beach City Council voted on Jan. 13 to end the Summer Emergency Vehicle Access Plan on Ocean Boulevard after business owners said closures hurt traffic and sales. City officials said they may adjust diversions for busy events if needed in the future.  The Post and Courier

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Rise Partners is planning a $60 million redevelopment of the Coastal Center Mall site on Hwy 501 in Conway. The plan already includes big retailers like HomeGoods, Marshall’s, Ulta, PetSmart & Walmart, with phase one set for completion by this summer and a full opening next year.  WFXB Fox TV
