- ➤ Leaders gathered on Jan. 8 at the Barefoot Resort Conference Center in North Myrtle Beach for the Economic Development Corporation's annual meeting, where officials reviewed key projects including a $10 million sawmill and a $10.8 million boat facility and presented data on job growth and economic trends in the county. - ➤ State forestry officials warn that wildfire risks rise this spring due to dry vegetation and La Niña, and residents in parts of Horry County should follow fire safety rules—protecting property and lives. - ➤ On Dec. 23, Garden City volunteers and S.C. DNR rescued 28 green sea turtle hatchlings and moved them 41 miles offshore (by boat) to boost survival after a late nest emergence. The coordinated effort marked a rare conservation success for local wildlife. The Post and Courier

- ➤ Crews from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will reexamine an area along the $72 million renourishment project on Wednesday after Cherry Grove residents expressed concern the project excluded protections for the area from 62nd Ave to the Point. - ➤ Horry County families have been facing high childcare costs since the state paused new childcare scholarship applications on Dec. 1, 2025; those currently receiving funding will see payments end one year later, forcing parents to weigh leaving their jobs against finding affordable care.
