COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Myrtle Beach held a groundbreaking ceremony for a Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Warbird Park on Wednesday at 2 p.m. The memorial will feature life-sized statues, engravings, plaques and quotes and is expected to be finished by late spring with sculpture installations planned for fall.  WMBF News
  • Crews in Carolina Forest are dismantling the old playground to make room for a new one. The updated play area is set to begin construction soon.  WPDE
  • Kind Keeper has partnered with Neal and Pam’s of Surfside Beach for a Polar Plunge event on Saturday, Jan. 10 that runs from 12:00 to 6:00 p.m. Swimmers pledge ($30 per swimmer) to join the 2:00 p.m. plunge and are eligible for a best-dressed prize chosen by Pet Wants.  WFXB Fox TV
  • Surfside Beach is refreshing its iconic pier with a new logo by Hanna McCutchen and updated dining options — including the Whistling Duck restaurant which opened Nov. 24. The town plans to add business kiosks and extra features to boost activity at this landmark amid cooler January weather.  My Horry News
  • Jim Quick with 94.9 The Surf discusses an upcoming Polar Plunge event to benefit the NMB Humane Society on Jan. 16 at 1:00 p.m. at the Horseshoe in North Myrtle Beach, offering prizes such as a cruise vacation & an Ocean Drive Beach Music Festival package.  WFXB Fox TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • On Jan. 6, the Myrtle Beach Planning Commission rezoned the former Palace Theatre site for a 28-acre Wavegarden surf park at Broadway at the Beach. Work is underway and the project, which will include a surf resort + hotels, is scheduled to open in 2027 pending financing.  The Post and Courier

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Conway City Council said 2.8 million guests visited downtown in 2025, driven by festivals, parades, and holiday displays that outpaced Hilton Head. Officials expect even more visitors in 2026 as they plan additional events.  My Horry News

  • A 500-foot dredging pipe washed ashore near Second Avenue Pier on Wednesday after falling off a barge headed to a renourishment project in North Myrtle Beach - tugboats are coming to retrieve it.  WMBF News

HEALTH NEWS

  • North Carolina resident Ronald Cope is suing Best Western Ocean Sands Beach Resort in North Myrtle Beach after his June 2023 stay led to a Legionnaires’ disease diagnosis and a hospital stay. He alleges the resort was negligent in addressing a foul-smelling room and malfunctioning equipment.  WMBF News

  • The Carolina Panthers released wide receiver Hunter Renfrow after his NFL comeback, making space for players returning from injury. He played in six games, catching 15 passes for 89 yards and two touchdowns.  WMBF News
