BUSINESS NEWS

CULTURE NEWS

  • Myrtle Beach will celebrate spooky season with family-friendly Halloween events downtown throughout October. Fright Nights will run at Plyler Park (Fridays and Saturdays from 5 to 8 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m.) and Nights at Nance will be held (Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m.).  WPDE
  • Freewoods Farm, a historic Black farm in Horry County, will be managed by South Carolina State University's 1890 Research and Extension Program in the coming weeks—its mission to preserve farming history will remain unchanged as O'Neal Smalls continues his work. The nonprofit museum will stay open to visitors while new leadership seeks a workforce to maintain its traditional practices.  WPDE
  • Conway was named one of the 40 Most Charming Small Downtowns in America by HGTV—its murals, historic streets, and plans for a larger Halloween celebration highlight the town's unique appeal to nearby visitors.  My Horry News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Officials from the Myrtle Beach Regional Economic Development Corporation and Golf Tourism Solutions announced a partnership to make Myrtle Beach a corporate home for golf-centric businesses in the over $1B domestic golf industry—drawing in equipment manufacturers, maintenance equipment suppliers, apparel brands, tech companies, media platforms and service providers. A recent study showed over three million rounds of golf were played in 2024, which generated a $1.6B impact and employed more than 13,000 people.  WFXB Fox TV
  • Galivants Ferry Sawmill will open a $10 million mill on McCracken Road outside Aynor and hire 18 workers to support businesses hurt by recent mill closures, company officials said. County leaders and the Myrtle Beach Regional Economic Development Corp noted that the facility is set to supply wood products to local industries—boosting the rural economy.  The Post and Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Horry County Schools will host a job fair today at its Regional Transportation Office along Investors Boulevard from 4 to 6 p.m. to hire nearly 60 bus drivers who must be at least 18 with proof of their highest education and a ten-year driving record—current drivers have been handling extra routes that cause major delays.  WFXB Fox TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Horry County is developing a new Behavioral Services department to support existing mental health programs by coordinating local services — the agency will build partnerships and help first responders use state opioid settlement funds to maintain crucial support. The department will not provide its own services but will work to clear the way for established programs to continue saving lives.  WMBF News
  • Myrtle Beach residents gathered at a town hall meeting to question mayoral and city council candidates about crime, over-development, and affordable housing. Voters heard from five mayoral and ten council candidates as voter registration runs until October 4 with elections set for November 4.  WPDE
  • Crews began demolishing part of a former motel on Ocean Boulevard—drivers should expect a road closure as the project continues in Myrtle Beach.  WMBF News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The American Heart Association will host its 44th annual Beach Ride at Lakewood Camping Resort in Myrtle Beach from November 5 to November 9 to raise money for heart disease and stroke, with a 20-mile ride on November 8 and events like silent auction, live music, and campsite activities—riders are expected from across the county.  WPDE

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Gray Media announced that the new weekly show Palmetto Life Weekend will debut on Oct. 4 on WMBF in Myrtle Beach — the program features events, food, travel, and culture from across South Carolina — and will air Saturdays at noon.  WMBF News

  • The Myrtle Beach Pelicans began a $20 million renovation of their stadium yesterday. The project will upgrade seating—modernizing facilities to improve fan experience and support the team.  WMBF News
  • Jostin Florentino, a 20-year-old pitcher for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, was named a Carolina League All-Star after he threw a historic no-hitter and struck out many batters — he finished with a 1.96 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 59.2 innings. His standout game with 12 strikeouts in 6 innings shows he is one of the league's best pitchers.  WFXB Fox TV
