CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Horry County released mugshots for 30 individuals on July 31st listing various charges such as disorderly conduct, driving under suspension, and trafficking in fentanyl — all subjects are considered innocent until proven guilty. WFXB Fox TV
- ➤ Austin Suman, 36, was sentenced to nine months in prison with a three-year supervised release for sending violent threats to a New York reporter via Facebook and email—he was arrested on Silver Spring Lane in the Cresswind neighborhood near Market Common after his earlier arrest for threatening a former roommate. - ➤ Zuri Stephens, an Horry County man, was sentenced Friday to eight years in federal prison for drug trafficking and firearm charges after federal marshals and local police served search warrants—an investigation that began early in 2022 after concerns in the Little River area. WPDE
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Dr. James Winebrake is the new president of Coastal Carolina University—he began work on July 7 and has met with students, faculty and community leaders while noting that his favorite color is teal. He said his top focus is student success and managing campus growth, including record enrollment and facility expansion, as he leads the school until June 30. My Horry News
- ➤ On July 31, Horry County Schools held ribbon-cutting ceremonies for two new elementary schools, with Pine Island Elementary on Ronald McNair Boulevard drawing students from Carolina Forest and River Oaks Elementary and Ten Oaks Elementary on Carolina Forest Boulevard drawing students from Carolina Forest and Ocean Bay Elementary (each school can serve up to 1,200 students). - ➤ On Friday, seventeen students completed the Myrtle Beach Police Department’s 7th Annual Junior Police Academy with a back-to-school shopping trip at Walmart — they gained hands-on experience with K-9, SWAT, patrol and detention units before returning to school. WPDE

- ➤ A petition signed by about 1,000 people challenges the Horry County investigation into inspirational speaker Chris Skinner’s 2021 death in his neighborhood pool. Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard and Coroner Robert Edge said that following protocol—such as contacting SLED within 24 hours—was not needed while Myrtle Beach Police reopened and later closed the case as new video evidence is under FBI review.
