CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Myrtle Beach police are investigating a series of armed robberies that occurred Tuesday into the early morning hours of Wednesday when victims were robbed at gunpoint in parking lots near Celebrity Circle, North Ocean Blvd, North Kings Highway, Colonial Drive and 65th Avenue North—four suspects have been arrested. - ➤ A defendant in the civil lawsuit over Scott Spivey’s shooting death asked the court to pause proceedings because SLED has not finished investigating how the police handled the shooting — his motion noted that initial discovery is complete and the case is set for a June hearing. WPDE
- ➤ On Friday, an officer tried to stop a car near Fantasy Harbor Boulevard and Forestbrook Road when driver Omega Wilson sped off and threw bricks of fentanyl before crashing near Pine Island Road in Myrtle Beach, where several vehicles were damaged and one bystander was injured—police recovered over 25 pounds of fentanyl valued around $1 million along with meth, cocaine, three firearms and other drugs, and Wilson faces charges for failing to stop and trafficking fentanyl. - ➤ Emil James Kennedy, 50, was arrested Tuesday in Little River by the U.S. Marshals Service Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force; he is charged with attempted murder & assault & battery by mob third degree and is held on a $50,000 bond at J. Reuben Long Detention Center. WPDE

- ➤ Coastal Carolina University is hosting its Campus Salvage Sale this Saturday from 7-9 a.m. in the YY Parking Lot on Highway 544 in Conway — where college students donate items to keep them out of landfills. The sale charges a $5 entry fee and most goods sell for $1 — with proceeds supporting the Sustain Coastal program. WPDE

- ➤ On Tuesday, the Myrtle Beach City Council approved a 30-year lease to keep the Pelicans in town and let the city own 70% of the ballpark—pending final county council approval—after working with extensions since the lease expired in 2018. WFXB Fox TV

- ➤ May is National Stroke Awareness Month and the South Carolina Department of Public Health is urging residents to learn stroke warning signs+act quickly to get help. Allison McElveen from DPH said rural areas face higher stroke risks+need extra care to detect and treat strokes early since the state ranks in the top 10 for stroke deaths. WPDE

- ➤ Coastal Carolina softball won the Sun Belt Conference Championship with upset wins against top teams and earned a spot in the regionals for the first time since 2012.
